Growing up in Uganda, my grandmother would always tell us stories at night. All of the kids would gather around and she would share something that always had a lesson hidden within. Here’s one of my favorites:

The Turtle, Hyena, and a Dog

Once upon a time, there lived a turtle, hyena, and a dog. The dog loved milk, the hyena loved meat and the turtle used to eat anything.

The turtle was a great medicine man in the area. So one day the hyena went to the turtle and told him that he was craving meat and asked the turtle for advice. The hyena wanted to eat the do,g but the dog was very fast and so he could not get it. So the turtle told the hyena to get milk and put it on the roadside. Since the dog loved milk so much, it would stop and drink the milk and allow the hyena to catch the dog.

The dog heard that the hyena wanted to eat him, so he too, went to the turtle for advice. The turtle told the dog that when he finds milk on the road, he should not stop and drink it. The dog left, and on his way he started smelling milk from  a distance. as he went further ahead the milk was really smelling good. He remembered what he was told to do, so he passed and did not take the milk…but as he went a little further, he decided to come back and drink the water. He thought that may be if he just took it very fast he was not going to get caught so he started. As he took it, the hyena grabbed him and ate him!

This teaches us that we should listen to advice and follow instructions 🙂
